How many species of penguins are there?
Most modern field and conservation references recognize about 18 living penguin species in the family Spheniscidae, from the tiny little blue penguin (around 30 cm tall) to the emperor penguin (up to 130 cm tall). Those birds span six genera: Aptenodytes, Pygoscelis, Eudyptula, Spheniscus, Megadyptes, and Eudyptes. Taxonomists still debate the rockhopper complex, so some lists use 17 or 19. Penguin Place follows the split and profiles 19 living taxa, including western, eastern, and northern rockhoppers as separate species pages.
