Definition

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of plant and animal species, maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Species are assessed and placed into categories from Least Concern to Extinct. As of 2024, five penguin species are classified as Endangered or worse, and several more are Vulnerable. The Red List assessment for each species relies on population size, rate of decline, geographic range, and habitat fragmentation.
